Welcome New Students We would like to welcome 4 new students who will work as research assistants at the Lab: Boris Skopljak, Li (Aimee) Yang, Ding Li, and Wei Wang. Destination: Moon Ohio researchers help plot the first return trip since 1972 while keeping an eye on Mars This fall, NASA is scheduled to launch its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which includes a camera to capture the clearest, most-detailed images of the moon to date, as well as a laser altimeter to record its topography. Rongxing Li, who runs the Mapping and GIS Lab at Ohio State University and is plotting the routes the twin Mars rovers travel, will integrate the pictures and topography to create 3-D maps that NASA will use to choose landing and exploration sites. Li also is working with a team from Glenn, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California at Berkeley on developing positioning and mapping technology to help astronauts avoid getting disoriented. Zero gravity and a foreign landscape make it difficult to judge distance, size and direction. Even with guidance from Houston, astronauts Alan Shepard and Ed Mitchell couldn't find the edge of a crater to collect rocks in 1971. The astronauts were 65 feet from the edge. Lab Student wins ISPRS Best Young Author Award Yunhang Chen, a master's student at the GIS & Mapping Lab, has won one of the prestigeous Best Papers by Young Authors awards conferred by ISPRS, the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing . This award is designated for papers on Space Science or Real-time Photogrammetry, which was established by Dr. Sherman Wu. The award, given for his paper “Bundle Adjustment of Mars HiRISE Stereo Images Based on Rigorous Sensor Model”, consists of a check for Swiss Francs 2500 and a certificate. It will be presented at the annual ISPRS Congress being held June 30 to July 3, 2008 in Beijing, China, where Yunhang will present his paper. Latest Mars Traverse Maps The latest traverse maps for the Mars rovers: Spirit (as of Sol 1719) and Opportunity (as of Sol 1697).
